Description

Dendrobates tinctorius ‘True Sipaliwini’ is a striking, medium-sized dart frog from the Sipaliwini region of southern Suriname, distinguished by its deep black body, intricate blue webbing, and characteristic cream-yellow horseshoe marking across the head. This distinctive locale is particularly notable for its history in captivity, with the original documented North American breeding line tracing back to animals collected for the National Aquarium in Baltimore during the 1990s. Juveniles may exhibit more extensive yellow coloration that gradually transitions to blue as they mature, leaving the characteristic yellow head marking. In the wild, D. tinctorius inhabits humid tropical forests, particularly leaf-littered forest floors, fallen logs, and treefall gaps where males transport tadpoles to small water pools. True Sipaliwini are bold, inquisitive frogs that make excellent displays, often spending much of the day exploring their enclosures. Like other D. tinctorius, they are best maintained singly or in compatible pairs, as adults, particularly females, can be territorial. They thrive in well-planted vivaria with abundant leaf litter, broad-leaved plants, cork hides, and stable humidity with good ventilation. Juveniles readily accept Drosophila melanogaster, while larger frogs can also take Drosophila hydei and other appropriately sized feeders. Captive-bred animals from Holotypica are raised with care and offered only once they are feeding well and established.
