Description
Dendrobates tinctorius ‘Azureus’ is a bold, medium-to-large dart frog known for its vivid blue coloration and bold behavior. This Suriname form is associated with isolated forest islands in the Sipaliwini savanna, in forest-floor habitat near small streams and dense understory. Males have a relatively quiet buzzing call, making ‘Azureus’ a good choice for keepers who want a visible, active dart frog without a loud vocalization. Adults are generally best kept as pairs as mature females can become competitive. They do well in setups with leaf litter, broad-leaved plants, hides, stable ventilation, and shallow water features or tadpole deposition options. They feed well on Drosophila melanogaster when young and larger feeders such as D. hydei and pinhead crickets as they grow. Captive-bred animals from Holotypica are raised with care and offered only once they are feeding well and established.
