Description
Dendrobates tinctorius ‘Yellow Sipaliwini’ is a striking, medium-to-large dart frog from the Sipaliwini region of southern Suriname, distinguished by its vibrant yellow coloration, contrasting black spotting, and dark limbs. This distinctive form is closely related to the Green Sipaliwini, sharing its characteristic bold patterning but exhibiting a rich, banana-yellow coloration in place of green. In the wild, D. tinctorius inhabits humid tropical forests, particularly leaf-littered forest floors, fallen logs, and treefall gaps where males transport tadpoles to small water pools. Yellow Sipaliwini are bold, active frogs that make excellent displays, often spending much of the day exploring their enclosures. Like other D. tinctorius, they are best maintained singly or in compatible pairs, as adults, particularly females, can be territorial. They thrive in well-planted vivaria with abundant leaf litter, broad-leaved plants, cork hides, and stable humidity with good ventilation. Juveniles readily accept Drosophila melanogaster, while larger frogs can also take Drosophila hydei and other appropriately sized feeders. Captive-bred animals from Holotypica are raised with care and offered only once they are feeding well and established.
