Description

Dendrobates leucomelas ‘Standard’ is a bold, active dart frog known for its bright yellow-and-black banding, hardy nature, and excellent display behavior. This species is native to northern South America, including Venezuela, northern Brazil, Guyana, and southeastern Colombia, where it is found in humid lowland rainforest habitats on the forest floor, wet rocks, tree roots, and lower vegetation. Males have a clear, buzzy trilling call that is louder and more noticeable than many tinctorius calls. D. leucomelas is generally more group-tolerant than many larger dart frogs and can often be kept in pairs or small groups, especially with plenty of space, leaf litter, hides, and visual barriers. They do well in vivaria with broad-leaved plants, cork hides, leaf litter, and deposition sites such as petri dishes under hides. They feed well on Drosophila melanogaster, D. hydei, springtails, and other appropriately sized feeders. Captive-bred animals from Holotypica are raised with care and offered only once they are feeding well and established.
