Description

Solomon Island leaf frogs (Ceratobatrachus guentheri; Cornufer guentheri) are unusual terrestrial frogs from the Solomon Islands region, where they live among leaf litter on the rainforest floor. Their triangular heads and “eyelash” projections, help them disappear into fallen leaves. They are nocturnal ambush predators and do best in humid enclosures with deep, clean substrate, leaf litter, hides, and a shallow water dish.

Males have a loud honking or bark-like call, especially in the evening. Similar-sized juveniles or adults can often be kept in pairs or small groups with enough floor space and visual cover, but they should not be crowded. Unlike most frogs, Solomon Island leaf frogs have direct development: eggs are buried in moist substrate and hatch into fully formed miniature frogs, with no free-swimming tadpole stage. They feed well on appropriately sized insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, large isopods, and other varied feeders. Captive-bred animals from Holotypica are raised with care and offered only once they are feeding well and established.
